“I championed that legislation. I read it, I was engaged in it, I participated in parts of it and it’s a good bill.”

“You know, in the course of a two-year-period, the ultimate and last vote is in your hands, not mine.”

Referring to her support of public health care and 2010 elections during a town hall meeting in Palo Alto

“I believe in competition, and a major reason for setting forth with the public plan is that it will create competition with the private sector in order to bring the prices down. People will want to move to the public option if the private companies don’t do what it is doing and many people won’t. They may want to keep it and if no one enrolls in it, then it won’t exist. I do I believe everyone deserves to have insurance, you bet I do. We’re being very careful in the construct of this. I don’t believe a public option will fail.”

“You might have heard their philosophical leader; I think his name is Rush Limbaugh. And he said early on ‘I hope that he fails.’ Do you know what that means? If the president, your commander-in-chief fails, America fails. Now, when a senator says that, ‘this will be his Waterloo,’ and we know what happened at Waterloo, then we have him and he fails. Do we want a failed state, called the United States? So remember they are spreading fear and their trying to see that the first president who looks like me fails . . .

It was just mentioned to me by our esteem speaker did anyone say anything about the Cuban health system? And let me tell you, before you say ‘oops, it’s communism,’ you need to go down there and see what Fidel Castro put in place. And I want you to know now that you can think whatever you want to about Fidel Castro. But he was one of the brightest leaders I have ever met.”

“I’m not taking away anything from some of the town halls that have been going on. But it seemed to me that not everybody got heard and sometimes the loudest people in the room overwhelmed some of the thoughtful ones who really wanted to ask a question. So I felt this is the best way to proceed.”

“Not only are we going to do everything we can to organize and put pressure on the senators — some of whom are Neanderthals — we’re going to say to the president, ‘We want you to use every weapon in your basket in order to get those senators to do what they should be doing,’ ”

Town hall meeting at Los Angeles Southwest College

“And so, what I’m looking for is, I’m looking for the very people who carry the signs who are referring to the policies in very, very strange ways like “Obamacare” and “Bury ObamaCare with Kennedy.” I want those people talked to; I want them interviewed. I want journalists to be all over those rallies and those marches with the birthers and the teabaggers. Let’s find out what they think.”

“I saw some of the clips of people storming these town hall meetings. The last time I saw well-dressed people doing this was when Al Gore asked me to go down to Florida, when they were recounting the ballots, and I was confronted with the same type of people. They were there, screaming and yelling ‘go back to California’, ‘get out of here’ and all the rest of it . . . This is all organized. Just go up on the web site . . . This was all planned.”

“So I thank all of you who have spoken out for your courage, your point of view. All of it. Your advocacy is very American, very important . . . There’s nothing more articulate, more eloquent, for the members of Congress than to hear the voice of his or her’s own constituents.”

“I have concerns about some of the language that is being used because I saw — I saw this myself in the late ’70s in San Francisco, this kind of — of rhetoric was very frightening and it gave — it created a climate in which we — violence took place. And so I wish that we would all, again, curb our enthusiasm in some of the statements that are made, understanding that — that some of the people — the ears it is falling on are not as balanced as the person making the statement might assume.”
